Georgia gun laws: a plain-English guide for buyers
Georgia has some of the least restrictive gun laws in the country. There is no permit to purchase, no registration, no waiting period and no limit on magazines, and since 2022 most adults can carry a handgun without a license. That does not mean there are no rules. Federal law still governs every dealer sale, Georgia still keeps a list of places where guns are banned, and hunting has its own equipment rules. This guide covers buying, carrying and transporting firearms in Georgia as of September 2026. It is general information, not legal advice; when in doubt, read the statute or ask a Georgia attorney.
Buying from a licensed dealer
Every firearm you order from us ships to a federally licensed dealer (FFL) in Georgia that you choose at checkout. At the counter you show a valid government photo ID, complete ATF Form 4473 and the dealer runs the federal background check. If the check comes back proceed, you leave with the gun the same day. If it comes back delayed, federal rules decide how long the dealer waits; Georgia adds nothing on top.
- Handguns: a dealer may sell only to buyers 21 and older under federal law.
- Rifles and shotguns: a dealer may sell to buyers 18 and older.
- No state permit: Georgia has no permit to purchase and no firearm owner ID card.
- No waiting period: Georgia sets none for any type of firearm.
- No registration: no state or local agency keeps a list of the guns you own.
Ammunition, optics, holsters and most parts ship straight to your door in Georgia with no license needed. If you want to see how an order moves from our catalog to your dealer, our gun shop page walks through it, and the full catalog lists what is available.
Private sales
Georgia does not require a background check when one Georgia resident sells a gun to another. It is still a crime to sell or give a firearm to someone you know is barred from having one, such as a convicted felon or a person under indictment for a felony, and Georgia law restricts furnishing handguns to anyone under 18. Sales across state lines must go through a dealer in the buyer's state. Many private sellers now meet at a dealer and pay for a transfer anyway, simply to have a clean record.
Statewide rules only
Georgia's preemption law reserves firearm regulation to the General Assembly. Cities and counties cannot pass their own registration, licensing or sales rules, so the law in Atlanta is the same as the law in Bainbridge or Dalton. Local governments can still set rules for their own employees and zoning for ranges, and they can ban discharge inside city limits except in self-defense.
Carrying a handgun
Senate Bill 319, the Georgia Constitutional Carry Act, took effect on April 12, 2022. It created the lawful weapons carrier: anyone who holds a Georgia weapons carry license, anyone who is eligible for one and not otherwise barred from having a weapon, a resident of another state who would be eligible except for residency, and anyone licensed to carry in another state. A lawful weapons carrier may carry a handgun openly or concealed, on foot or in a vehicle, without a Georgia license.
Eligibility tracks the license rules. In practice that means you must be 21, or 18 or older with qualifying military service, and you must not be disqualified by a felony conviction, certain misdemeanor convictions, pending charges, recent involuntary hospitalization or drug and alcohol treatment, or similar grounds listed in the statute. If you would be denied a license, you are not a lawful weapons carrier.
The Georgia weapons carry license, issued by the probate court in your county of residence, is still available and still useful. Our Georgia weapons carry license guide covers fees, the application and reciprocity.
Where you still cannot carry
Permitless carry did not change the list of restricted places. The main ones are:
- courthouses and government buildings where entry is screened by security staff;
- jails and prisons;
- state mental health facilities that admit people for involuntary treatment;
- nuclear power facilities;
- within 150 feet of a polling place during an election;
- school safety zones, school buses and school functions, with narrow exceptions;
- places of worship, unless the governing body allows it;
- the secured side of airport screening checkpoints.
Private property owners and people in legal control of property can forbid guns, and you must leave if asked. On public college and university campuses, handguns must be carried concealed and several areas, including athletic events, student housing and certain classrooms, stay off-limits.
Guns in vehicles
A lawful weapons carrier may keep a loaded handgun anywhere in a private vehicle. Long guns may be carried loaded or unloaded in a vehicle as well. Georgia's parking lot law generally lets employees keep a lawfully owned firearm locked out of sight in their own car in the employer's lot, with some exceptions.
Self-defense
Georgia law has no duty to retreat. A person who is not the aggressor and is where they have a right to be may use force, including deadly force, when they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death, great bodily injury or a forcible felony. Those rules are fact-heavy, and a carry permit does not change them. Training and a clear understanding of the law matter more than any gun you buy.
Hunting rules that affect gun choice
For deer and bear during firearms season, Georgia allows centerfire rifles and handguns .22 caliber or larger with expanding bullets, shotguns 20 gauge or larger with slugs or buckshot, and muzzleloaders .30 caliber or larger. There is no magazine limit on rifles. Suppressors that you lawfully own may be used for hunting. Waterfowl hunters must use non-toxic shot and plug shotguns to three shells. Our Georgia deer rifle guide covers the 2026-27 seasons in detail.
NFA items
Suppressors and short-barreled rifles and shotguns are legal in Georgia when registered under the National Firearms Act. Approval comes from ATF, not the state. Keep your paperwork with you, including at DNR ranges, which require proof of registration for suppressors.
Buying a Taurus in Georgia
Taurus USA builds its handguns in Bainbridge, in Decatur County, but that does not change how you buy one: every Taurus pistol or revolver still goes through a licensed dealer and a background check, and the age 21 rule applies. Our Taurus buyer's guide compares the lineup, and our Judge guide covers the .45 Colt and .410 revolvers.
