Since April 12, 2022, Georgia has allowed permitless carry. Anyone who qualifies for a Georgia weapons carry license and is not barred from possessing a firearm is a lawful weapons carrier and may carry a handgun openly or concealed without the license. That generally means age 21, or 18 with qualifying military service. The license itself is still issued by the Fulton County Probate Court for five years and is worth having for travel to reciprocity states. Courthouses, jails, secured government buildings, school safety zones and the area within 150 feet of a polling place remain off-limits.
Georgia's 2026-27 deer seasons are set statewide: archery opens Sept. 12, 2026, primitive weapons run Oct. 10-16, and the firearms season runs Oct. 17, 2026 through Jan. 10, 2027, closing Jan. 15 in one zone. Either-sex days depend on the color-coded zone that covers Fulton County. Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton north of GA 92 are archery only. Legal deer firearms are centerfire rifles and handguns .22 caliber or larger with expanding bullets, shotguns 20 gauge or larger with slugs or buckshot, and muzzleloaders .30 caliber or larger. The season limit is 10 antlerless and 2 antlered deer.
Fulton County north of GA Highway 92 is archery only for deer, and the whole county is on the extended archery list through Jan. 31, 2027. Rifle hunters usually drive to WMAs such as Paulding Forest, Dawson Forest or Clybel.
The nearest Wildlife Resources Division firearm range is Clybel at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center near Mansfield, about an hour east off I-20.
The Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Division runs firearm ranges on Wildlife Management Areas, open Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday afternoons and closed Mondays. Shooters 16 and older need a Georgia hunting or fishing license or a Lands Pass and must complete the range safety video certification through GoOutdoorsGeorgia; the Forest Service ranges at Sumac Creek and Chestnut Mountain take payment on recreation.gov, and the county-run ranges set their own fees.
